We were in a thunder storm. You can tell how far away it is by timing the gap between the flash of lightening and the rumble, or bang, of thunder.Then I was asked how long it was for me between the flash and the bang.

The speed of sound is approximately 1100 ft/sec or 343 m/sec. That's about a mile for every 5 seconds or a kilometer for every 3 seconds.
