Does going to college make one intelligent?

Return to Discussions

In most cases, going to college helps one to become intelligent; however, it does not garentee it. I have met some very smart people who have not gone to college, and I have met others who have achieved high degrees in college, yet they can't deal with simple things in life. That is part of the reason why I like the show, The Big Bang Theory.

There is a big difference between book smarts and common sense. I went to college briefly (a year) and can say I am a much smarter man now than I was then. My beliefs, outlook on life and problem solving skills are far better now than they were then. Experience counts for a lot.

I agree with you, HappyNakedPaul. Also, a combination of some college/trade school can go a long way.

Scott has it right. Intelligence is innate. Higher education is merely adding more information, culture, etc. to the mix. ("Higher and Deeper" as they say...)
