A lifestyle resort is an adults-only hotel where clothing is optional in defined areas, open flirting between guests is normal, and there is a playroom for couples who want one; nobody has to use any of it. The five best-known examples, in Jamaica, Mexico, Florida and California, each draw the lines differently, and knowing where before you book is the whole trick.
What "lifestyle resort" does and does not mean
Resorts in this category share three things: a minimum age (18 at Hedonism II, 21 at Desire and Temptation), areas where nudity or toplessness is allowed, and a tolerance for guests who are visibly in the lifestyle. What they do not share is a rule that anyone plays. A typical week at a lifestyle resort has a majority of couples who are there for a sexy, judgment-free holiday and a minority who use the playroom. The resort rules protect both: zero tolerance for touching without permission, play only when invited, and strict camera bans. If you have been to a club, the etiquette is the same with a beach attached.
Hedonism II, Negril, Jamaica
The original. Hedonism II on Negril's beach is clothing-optional with a nude side and a clothing-optional side; on the nude beach, nude pool and hot tub, nudity is required, while cover-ups are required in restaurants, the lobby and the gym. Guests must be 18 or over. Couples and singles are both welcome, with single occupancy charged at 150 percent of the per-person rate and a maximum of three to a room. The playroom opens from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. for couples, single women and invited single men, and public displays of affection are confined to the playroom, the nude pool and the hot tub. Cameras and phones are banned entirely in the nude areas, and smart glasses or any wearable that can record are banned across the property.
It is all-inclusive: meals, snacks, premium drinks 24 hours, non-motorized water sports and free daily dives for certified divers. Published rates start around $250 per person per night and rise past $500 for ocean-view rooms with a private hot tub, and the cancellation charge inside 21 days of arrival is $200 per person. Lifestyle group weeks, when a travel company fills the resort with couples, sell out furthest ahead.
Desire Riviera Maya and Desire Pearl, Mexico
Both Desire resorts sit near Puerto Morelos, about twenty minutes south of Cancun airport, and both are couples-only with a minimum age of 21 and ID checked at check-in. They are clothing-optional at the beach, pool and jacuzzi lounge, with a playroom open at night, and all-inclusive. Desire Riviera Maya is the larger and livelier of the two, with around 114 rooms; Desire Pearl is smaller and quieter, and regulars choose between them on that basis. Dates can be changed or canceled free up to seven days before check-in when booked direct, and the resort's own site promises to match any lower rate. Theme nights run most evenings and the dress codes for them are published in advance, so pack for them.
Temptation Cancun: topless, not swinger
Temptation is Desire's sister resort in the Cancun hotel zone and is often confused with it. It is adults-only, 21 and over, and topless-optional at its pools, large jacuzzi and beach. It is not a lifestyle resort: nudity is not allowed anywhere on the property, there is no playroom, and the resort's own answer to guests asking for either is to point them to Desire. It is a loud, fun, party hotel with theme nights and dress codes, and it is the right choice for a couple who wants that and nothing more. Booking it expecting Hedonism is the most common mistake in lifestyle travel.
Caliente, Land O' Lakes, Florida
Caliente is a gated clothing-optional resort and residential community about thirty minutes north of Tampa, with hotel rooms, condos and casitas, several pools, a spa, restaurants and a nightclub. It is a nudist resort first; the lifestyle side lives in adult theme nights at the club and in the Tampa lifestyle crowd that uses it as a base. Daily memberships let you visit for the day, and membership is required to stay or to buy property. It is the one resort on this list you can reach for a Friday night rather than a week, and the Florida resort listings carry the smaller lifestyle-friendly properties around it.
Sea Mountain Inn, Desert Hot Springs, California
Sea Mountain Inn is a small nude, adults-only resort and spa in the Coachella Valley, ten minutes from Palm Springs airport, built around mineral hot-spring pools and clothing-optional decks. It accepts women and couples only, with no single men on the property, and runs lifestyle events through the year. Breakfast is included with a stay and day-spa visits are available. It is the Los Angeles lifestyle crowd's weekend resort, so holiday weekends book out early.

Costs and booking windows
- Price: expect several hundred dollars per person per night all-inclusive at the Caribbean and Mexican resorts, before flights. Room category (garden view, ocean view, private hot tub) is where most of the range comes from.
- When to book: peak winter weeks, holidays and lifestyle group takeovers fill six to twelve months ahead. Shoulder season (late spring, early autumn) is cheaper and quieter.
- Group weeks: travel companies and lifestyle event brands regularly buy out a block or the whole resort for a themed week. These are the busiest, most social weeks and the ones most couples recommend for a first visit; they are listed on the events calendar.
- Deposits: all five take a card to hold a booking, and the cancellation terms differ enough to read before paying.
Choosing
If you want nudity and a playroom with the widest crowd, Hedonism II. Couples-only and quieter, Desire Pearl; couples-only and livelier, Desire Riviera Maya. A party hotel with tops optional and nothing further, Temptation. A long weekend without a flight, Caliente from Tampa or Sea Mountain from Los Angeles. All of them, and the smaller resorts in the same category, are in the resort directory with member reviews, and the couples who go every year are findable through the member directory. If a week at sea sounds better than a week on a beach, the cruise and takeover guide is next.
